The Ruddy Kingfisher(Halcyon coromanda) is a medium-sized tree kingfisherwhich is widely distributed in east and southeast Asia, ranging from South Korea andJapan in the north, south through the Philippines to theSunda Islands, and west toChina and India. It is migratory, with birds in the northern part of the range migrating as far south as Borneo during winter. Locally common in southern parts of its range, the Ruddy Kingfisher is rare in Japan, where it is highly sought after by birders. Ruddy Kingfishers inhabit forested areas from the temperate to tropical zones, often in thick jungles and rainforests.

Reaching approximately 25cm, the Ruddy Kingfisher has a very large, bright red bill and equally red legs. The body is rust red, generally deepening to purple at the tail. There is little sexual dimorphism though some sources state that male birds are somewhat brighter in plumage.

The binomial name recalls theCoromandel Coast of India.Like other kingfishers, Ruddy Kingfishers generally feed on fish, crustaceans, and large insects, though in areas with less running water, they are known to take frogs and other amphibians. Due to its preference for heavily forested areas, the kingfisher's high, descending call is more often heard than the bird itself is seen, and these birds generally travel singly or in pairs.

Stork Billed Kingfisher

This is a very large kingfisher, 35 cm in length. The adult has a green back, blue wings and tail, and grey head. Its underparts and neck are buff. The very large bill and legs are bright red. The flight of the Stork-billed Kingfisher is laboured and flapping, but direct. Sexes are similar. There are 15 races, mostly differing in plumage detail, but P. c. gigantea of the Sulu Islands has a white head, neck and underparts. The call of this noisy kingfisher is a low and far reaching peer-por-por repeated every 5 seconds or so as well cackling ke-ke-ke-ke-ke-ke.

Stork-billed Kingfisher is a species of a variety of well-wooded habitats near lakes, rivers or coasts. It perches quietly whilst seeking food, and is often inconspicuous despite its size. It is territorial and will chase away eagles and other large predators. This species hunts fish, frogs, crabs, rodents and young birds.

Stork-billed Kingfisher digs its nest in a river bank, decaying tree, or a tree termite nest. A clutch of two to five round white eggs is typical.

Nabil Fikri Haronli is one of the Sultanate's well-renowned artists and specialises in drawing portraits.

Five years ago, this talented 24-year-old was only a student but has since gained popularity and success amongst art enthusiasts in the country.

His artworks are displayed at Sumbangsih Mulia in Beribi and judging from his drawings, Nabil certainly proves his artistic skills in his masterpieces ranging from water-coloured flora and fauna paintings, pencil sketches of local sceneries as well as individual portraits.

He began his art business in February 2009 and called his booth 'Nabil Fikri's Art Corner'.

"My aim is to promote the local arts scene especially to tourists," said Nabil. "In the past, people used to say that Bruneians weren't able to survive working as a full-time artists. I want to prove that this century-old comment was wrong."

The artists continued on by saying that any individual can achieve limitless success if they work hard for it and are willing to accept the various challenges faced.

Nabil also participates in charity bazaars and expos nationwide. The talented youngster conducts various workshops on portrait drawings for secondary school students during the holidays. He also organises art exhibitions with the G5 Artist Group.

In his role as the G5 Artist Group President, he had earlier organised two major exhibitions, which needed much preparations.

He is also concerned about the students' progress in their artwork and therefore, attends exhibitions organised by various schools in the Sultanate. Nabil also had the opportunity to meet a well-renowned artist, Pg Dato Paduka Hj Asmalee, during an art expo at PTE in Berakas.

One of his most priceless drawings is the portrait of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei. He drew it from an old 1968 photo, which was the same year as His Majesty's coronation. According to Nabil, the drawing possesses a historical value and he has turned down a lot of offers by art enthusiasts wishing to purchase the portrait.

"Use your talents to promote Brunei," Nabil said, hoping that more talented youngsters would come forward to showcase their skills in the art scene.
